The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered federal health agencies to suspend all external communications, including health advisories, scientific reports, website updates, and social media posts, according to the Washington Post. The directive, delivered on Tuesday, affects agencies within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Sources cited by the Washington Post revealed that the instructions aim to give newly appointed Trump health officials time to review the extensive information flow from these agencies. Stefanie Spear, HHS deputy chief of staff, reportedly conveyed the communication freeze to agency staff.
It remains unclear whether the directive applies to urgent updates such as foodborne illness outbreaks, drug approvals, or bird flu cases. None of the affected agencies have commented on the matter.
The move comes shortly after Trump took office on Monday and has raised concerns among some officials about potential disruptions to critical public health information. However, others suggest the pause is a standard measure during transitions to ensure the new administration gains a comprehensive understanding of agency operations.
This temporary halt underscores the administration's approach to overseeing federal health communications during its initial days in office. Public health experts will be closely monitoring how this directive impacts the timely dissemination of crucial health updates.
