U.S. President Donald Trump announced Wednesday evening that eligible U.S. military personnel will receive a one-time cash payment of $1,776, a move he described as a “special warrior dividend” timed ahead of Christmas. The announcement was made during a televised address from the White House, where Trump said the payment honors America’s founding year of 1776 and that the checks are already being distributed.
According to an official White House statement, the cash bonus will be paid to active duty service members in grades O-6 and below. In addition, reserve component service members in grades O-6 and below who are serving on active duty orders of 31 days or more as of November 30 will also qualify for the payment. The policy applies across all six branches of the U.S. armed forces, which together include roughly 1.3 million active personnel.
The military cash payment is being positioned as a recognition of service and sacrifice, particularly during a period of heightened global tensions and domestic economic concerns. Trump emphasized that the payout is meant to show appreciation for those serving in uniform, while also tying the amount symbolically to American independence and national history.
During the remainder of his address, Trump highlighted what he described as major accomplishments from his administration’s first 11 months in office. He claimed that living costs and healthcare expenses for Americans were declining, and argued that his administration’s trade tariffs were generating record levels of government revenue. Trump also said these tariffs were encouraging increased business investment and manufacturing activity within the United States.
The president used portions of his speech to criticize political opponents, including former President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party more broadly. These remarks were interspersed with economic and policy claims, continuing Trump’s combative political style even during an announcement focused on the military.
The $1,776 military payment announcement is expected to draw significant public and political attention, particularly as discussions continue around defense spending, economic policy, and support for service members and veterans across the country.
