President Donald Trump declined to say if U.S. fighting with Iran could resume this week, The Independent reported, while two diplomats told The Associated Press Gulf allies were warned of possible post-election action.

The Independent said the exchange took place Saturday night during a Halloween gathering at Mar-a-Lago, Trump's Florida resort. A reporter asked whether U.S.-Iran fighting could resume during the week. Trump responded, “Why would you ask such a stupid question?” He said he would not reveal whether he planned to act.

The Associated Press said two diplomats briefed on the discussions reported warnings from U.S. officials to several Gulf allies ahead of possible post-election military action. They said Trump was weighing renewed strikes on Iranian infrastructure and nuclear sites and described a possible campaign as short and intense.

Voters cast ballots Tuesday in contests that will decide control of the House and Senate.
