Former U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoy, Richard Grenell, announced he is returning to the U.S. with six American citizens after a meeting with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in Caracas. The unexpected development comes as the Trump administration pushes deportations and anti-gang efforts.
Grenell shared a photo of the six men, dressed in Venezuelan prison uniforms, aboard a plane, stating, “We are wheels up and headed home.” Trump celebrated the release, calling them "hostages." It remains unclear how many Americans are still detained in Venezuela, though officials have previously mentioned at least nine. Maduro’s government has accused some detainees of terrorism, while U.S. officials deny any wrongdoing.
The meeting between Grenell and Maduro also covered migration and sanctions. Trump’s administration is focused on deporting 400 members of Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua gang, currently in U.S. custody. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized that an agreement on these deportations was “non-negotiable.” Venezuela previously claimed to have dismantled the gang but signaled willingness to cooperate on extraditions.
Maduro described the meeting as positive, stating, “We have made a first step, hopefully it can continue.” While Grenell’s visit does not indicate U.S. recognition of Maduro’s leadership, both nations share interests in key issues, including oil sanctions.
The Biden administration reinstated oil sanctions after claiming Maduro failed to ensure a free election. Trump, facing limited options for further penalties, has indicated the U.S. may stop purchasing Venezuelan oil. Meanwhile, Chevron is working to protect its special license to operate in Venezuela as discussions continue.
