Former President Donald Trump claimed without evidence that a recent midair collision near Reagan National Airport was linked to the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) diversity hiring policies. The crash, which involved a passenger jet and an Army helicopter, killed all 67 people on board.

During a White House press briefing, Trump criticized the FAA’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, alleging that efforts to hire individuals with disabilities compromised air safety. "Air traffic controllers must be the highest level of genius," Trump said, arguing that DEI hiring standards were to blame.

However, aviation safety experts and disability advocates condemned Trump’s remarks. Former FAA officials emphasized that air traffic controllers undergo rigorous mental and physical testing before employment. Anthony Brickhouse, an aviation safety expert, stated, “Safety is about investigating and improving—not pushing an agenda.”

Trump’s comments also sparked political controversy. He recently issued an executive order eliminating government diversity programs and instructed agencies to review DEI-related roles. Critics argue that such measures undermine efforts to address longstanding workforce inequities.

Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), stated that investigations would focus on factual causes rather than political narratives. “We examine the human, machine, and environment,” she said.

Disability rights advocate James Ward condemned Trump’s rhetoric as “ableist and bigoted,” warning that it endangers marginalized groups. Meanwhile, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg rebuked Trump’s claims, calling them “despicable.”

The FAA has not commented on the accusations. The crash is now under federal investigation, with experts urging a focus on safety improvements rather than political blame.
