U.S. President Donald Trump has authorized the temporary suspension of certain duties on phosphate fertilizer imports from Morocco in an effort to ease fertilizer shortages affecting American farmers, the White House announced on Monday. The move comes as global fertilizer supply chains continue to face disruptions caused by the ongoing Iran war and broader geopolitical tensions.
The White House said the decision is intended to help stabilize fertilizer supplies for U.S. agriculture at a time when domestic production remains insufficient to meet demand. Farmers across the country have been dealing with tighter fertilizer availability after shipments from key producers in the Middle East were affected by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route.
White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett previously indicated in March that the Trump administration was actively seeking alternative fertilizer sources to reduce the impact of supply disruptions. The administration views Morocco as a reliable supplier capable of supporting U.S. agricultural needs while global markets remain volatile.
In a proclamation released by the White House, President Trump said international supply chains for phosphate fertilizer and fertilizer inputs have been significantly disrupted in recent months due to conflicts involving fertilizer-producing regions and trade actions implemented by major producing countries. These challenges have placed additional pressure on global agricultural markets and increased concerns over fertilizer availability.
Trump also noted that current U.S. phosphate fertilizer production cannot fully support domestic agricultural food production once export commitments are taken into account. While the administration is working alongside private companies to expand domestic fertilizer manufacturing capacity, those investments will require time before they meaningfully increase production.
Until additional domestic capacity becomes available, the administration believes imports from countries such as Morocco can help bridge the supply gap without significant disruption. The temporary suspension of duties is expected to improve fertilizer availability for American farmers, support crop production, and help strengthen food security as global supply chain challenges continue to affect agricultural markets.
