LAS VEGAS, Dec. 16, 2016 -- Flex Spending Account (FSA) funds can be used for needed LASIK and other vision correction services. Patients with remaining funds at the end of the year can use them to partially or fully cover LASIK and other vision-related treatments. By scheduling an appointment soon, all patients can use their 2016 FSA funds towards end-of-year vision treatments. Depending on the FSA provider, some or all remaining FSA funds from 2016 may be applied to a procedure in 2017. Eye doctors can assist patients in taking full advantage of remaining FSA dollars and receiving necessary eye care services.
Patients should be aware that LASIK surgery is an eligible medical expense that is covered using FSA funds. An FSA offers tax advantages to the employee in cases of medical expenses, dependent care, and other approved medical expenses. Any money forwarded into an FSA account is not subject to payroll taxes and deductions. Consequently, use of FSA can decrease taxable income and make LASIK surgery more affordable for vision patients.
Some people may forfeit money placed in their FSA account during 2016 at the beginning of 2017. Regarding monies unused during a current year, an FSA provider may provide one of two options (but not both): (1) a “grace period” of up to 2 ½ extra months to use all money from their FSA from the previous year or (2) to carry over up to $500 from the previous year. Consumers should know that FSA providers are not obligated to provide either one, so Trusted LASIK Surgeons™ recommends patients considering LASIK or another vision correction procedure review their FSA plan with their provider in detail so they understand what will happen to their FSA funds as the end of the year approaches and can make plans to use any dedicated pre-tax dollars accrued in their FSA on any needed and elective vision treatments.
“FSA funds can be used for many vision services, including LASIK surgery and annual eye exams,” said James J. Salz, M.D., CEO of Trusted LASIK Surgeons™. “Patients seeking LASIK or another vision correction procedure can find an expert surgeon at our Trusted LASIK Surgeons™ directory and we encourage them to do so.”
