A Minnesota family’s forced transfer of more than $8 million in cryptocurrency led a federal judge to sentence two Texas brothers to lengthy prison terms, the Justice Department said.
U.S. District Judge Donovan W. Frank sentenced Raymond Christian Garcia to 180 months and Isiah Angelo Garcia to 186 months on Oct. 29.
The Justice Department said the brothers bound family members with zip ties and guarded them at gunpoint for more than nine hours during the Sept. 19, 2025, attack in Grant, Minnesota, as they sought access to the victim’s crypto accounts. The Justice Department said the victim was forced to transfer more than $8 million.
Isiah Garcia later forced the victim to travel to a family cabin in northern Minnesota for more storage devices after deciding the first transfers were insufficient. The victim’s son called 911, prompting the brothers to flee. Authorities later arrested them near Houston, Texas.
Each man pleaded guilty June 18 to one count of interference with commerce by robbery. The Justice Department said they agreed to pay more than $8 million in restitution. The FBI Minneapolis Field Office and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case.
