Gulnar Hasnain, a Green Party contender for the London constituency of Vauxhall, has exceeded the cryptocurrency crowdfunding target of £1,000 by 50 percent. The total amount raised stood at £1,500 and will be used to sponsor marketing materials ahead of the UK's General Election, to be held next May.
"It's just great to feel the love out there from this community of people who aren't necessarily interested in politics but are interested in change" Hasnain said and added that the support she has received from the bitcoin community is astounding.
The campaign, which lasted four weeks, concluded at the end of last month with nearly 31 people contributing to it. She said that the funds raised have not been spent yet, and plans to use it to pay for leaflets highlighting the Green Party's policies on housing, tax evasion and the environment.
Hasnain joins several other politicians who are embracing cryptocurrency donations, including those in the US. She noted that the blockchain technology has the potential to make voting easier and more secure in the future.
"It's being tested and there are still issues," Hasnain said, adding: "Though it does have transformative potential."
