British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Chilean President Jose Antonio Kast discussed defense and trade ties between their countries, Downing Street said.

The call took place Friday, Oct. 23. Downing Street said the leaders saw joint work as necessary to bring their defense capabilities up to date.

Burnham told Kast that the UK wanted Falkland Islanders to retain their right to self-determination. The leaders also discussed cultural, scientific and people-to-people ties. Downing Street said those links had supported investment and infrastructure opportunities, and that the leaders saw room for closer trade.

Downing Street said the leaders expected to speak again.

Earlier EconoTimes coverage examined Gardiner’s argument about the U.S. interest in backing Britain on the Falklands.
