The U.S. State Department has approved a potential $800 million military helicopter sale to Iraq, strengthening defense cooperation between Washington and Baghdad as Iraq continues efforts to modernize its armed forces.
The State Department announced the approval on Monday, confirming that the proposed foreign military sale includes helicopters for the Iraqi government. The transaction is valued at approximately $800 million.
Bell Textron, a major U.S. aerospace and defense manufacturer based in Fort Worth, Texas, will serve as the principal contractor for the deal, according to the department's statement.
The proposed sale represents another significant U.S. defense agreement with Iraq, which has relied on American military equipment and support for years. Helicopters play an important role in Iraqi military operations, including troop transportation, surveillance, logistics and other security missions.
Approval from the State Department is a key stage in the U.S. Foreign Military Sales process. Such transactions are designed to provide partner countries with American-made defense equipment while supporting broader U.S. security and foreign policy objectives.
The $800 million Iraq helicopter deal also highlights the continuing role of U.S. defense companies in supplying military equipment to partners in the Middle East. Bell Textron manufactures a range of military and commercial aircraft and has a long history of supplying helicopters to the U.S. government and international customers.
Iraq continues to face a complex regional security environment, making the modernization and maintenance of its military capabilities an important priority for Baghdad.
The State Department's approval signals Washington's continued defense relationship with Iraq and could provide additional capabilities for Iraqi forces once the proposed transaction is completed.
The announcement did not provide further details about the timetable for delivery or when the helicopters could enter Iraqi service.
