The weekend’s bombing in New York has once again brought the homeland security issue at the center of the campaign. On Saturday, an explosion took place in the Chelsea neighborhood of the New York City that wounded 29 fatally. None of the injuries were fatal; however, one person is reported to be in a serious condition. Another bomb was found four blocks away but that was safely deactivated. The security forces, including the FBI are not sure of the motive at this point and no international terrorist organization has accepted claims for the attack. In a separate event, a man attacked and wounded nine people in a mall by stabbing before he was taken out by an off-duty police officer. Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack, describing the attacker as a soldier. Another device of pipe bombs got exploded in New Jersey but none was hurt in that incident.
These mishaps could benefit the campaign of Donald Trump, who has kept homeland security as one of his top agendas from the beginning. However, last time after the shooting in Orlando that killed 49 people, Trump said that he was right on his comments on security, however, his lack of compassion benefited Clinton campaign. So this time, Mr. Trump’s response was much more measured. He just offered his condolences and said it is the time to get tough.
