US special envoy John Kerry pressed his Chinese counterpart Xie Zhenhua on China's obligation to phase out coal over the next 20 years based on an agreement signed with the US
The US and China had announced earlier in the week about Beijing agreeing to accelerate its phase-down of coal this decade.
The meeting between Kerry and Xie happened at the UN climate conference in Glasgow..before envoys from the US, the EU, China, and India discussed details of an agreed phaseout of coal
The UK conference hosts pressed for the accord that could keep alive an international goal to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
The draft agreement from the Glasgow conference, which has yet to be adopted by a vote, also calls on countries to phase down coal.
