On the very first day of the 115th congress, the House Republicans tried to scale back the Independent Ethics oversight but had to reverse their course after a bipartisan outcry and a tweeter criticism from the President-elect Donald Trump. Their proposal would have curbed the powers of the Office of Congressional Ethics, an independent office that investigates allegations of wrongdoing by elected officials.
Mr. Trump criticized Republican’s decision via Twitter, saying, “With all that Congress has to work on, do they really have to make the weakening of the Independent Ethics Watchdog, as unfair as it may be, their number one act and priority……..Focus on tax reform, healthcare and so many other things of far greater importance! #DTS.” The DTS stands for Drain the Swamp. Also, some of the Republicans felt that this shouldn’t be the message they should be sending to the people.
The reversal in position came just hours after Mr. Trump’s criticizing tweet, which shows that the President-elect is already wielding
