Ukrainian journalists used a Nov. 2 video appeal to urge international colleagues to sustain attention on Russia's war and oppose sanctions relief, arguing that lifting restrictions could help Moscow rebuild strength.

The Kyiv Independent reported that Russian attacks were killing and injuring civilians, while cities faced prolonged power outages and water shortages during Russia's campaign against Ukraine's energy and water grids. The journalists also challenged descriptions of Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries as “madness and a disgrace,” placing that language alongside questions about people killed by Russian ballistic missiles and damage to bridges, schools and hospitals.

The appeal said reporting could influence politicians' decisions on sanctions. “The courage of politicians depends on journalists,” the speakers said.

In October, The Kyiv Independent reported, U.S. President Donald Trump pressed Kyiv to stop strikes on Russian oil refineries, announced a diesel deal with Moscow and waived key sanctions against Russia.
