With Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End being the last foray of legendary adventurer Nathan Drake into the world of tomb raiding, many wondered if the spin-off Uncharted: The Lost Legacy can do the franchise justice. In a recent event where Naughty Dog allowed attendees to try a significant part of the game, it would seem that video game publishers had positive impressions of the title.
The new Uncharted game features recurring female heroin Chloe Frazer, who fans of the series will already know. The title is set after the events of the final Drake adventure where Chloe is on the hunt for yet another lost treasure. More to the point Chloe and her other female companion have been amoral in past games, VentureBeat notes.
In Lost Legacy Naughty Dog fleshes out the femme fatale in a way that previous games have failed to do. The title’s writer Josh Scherr also commented on the challenges of finding a balance between a providing a well-developed protagonist without being a little too on the nose.
“What was always interesting to us, though, is that unlike Drake, who has a bit of a hero complex, Chloe is more interested in self-preservation, almost pathologically so,” Scherr said. “To the point where, if the heat starts getting turned up too much, she’s more than willing to bail on her partners and leave them holding the bag.”
As for the game itself, enthusiasts got to try a small portion of the game, which is set in the lush jungle regions on the West Indian peninsula. Like A Thief’s End, The Lost Legacy is open-world and the jungle setting is the largest space that the developers have created for the franchise, Game Spot reports.
This allows for more freedom in how players can approach missions and objectives. Speaking of which, having Chloe as the main character also adds some refreshing mechanics to the game, including lock picking skills.
All in all, The Lost Legacy forces players to be more resourceful and creative with their tactics, which is both a departure and a great addition to the usual Uncharted fare. While only a small portion of the game has been revealed so far, it’s safe to assume that Naughty Dog is set to deliver yet another gem.
