‘Underworld: Blood Wars’ Film Updates: Kate Beckinsale’s Vampire Selene Gets New Powers, Goes to Battle in Official Trailer

Kate Beckinsale stars as Selene in 'Underworld: Blood Wars

‘Underworld: Blood Wars’ actress Kate Beckinsale returns as a more powerful vampire Selene in the film’s latest official trailer. In the new trailer, Selene goes into battle in the war between humans, vampires, and lycans.

According to Digital Spy, the latest official trailer for director Anna Foerster’s upcoming installment in the popular vampire and werewolf cinematic franchise features the return of Kate Beckinsale as the lead protagonist Selene. Her character is seen in the frontlines of an ongoing battle between vampires, lycans, and several mortal enemies.

Selene says, "The vampire and lycan clans have been at war for centuries, turning our world into a battlefield. For me, the fight is personal… Everyone I've ever loved has been hunted down. Now a new war is being waged."

According to Movie Web, the new film’s plot follows Selene as she battles to end the longstanding war between the Lycan clan and her own vampire faction that betrayed her. Theo James of ‘Divergent’ fame also stars as Selene’s ally David.

Other members of the cast include Tobias Menzies and Lara Pulver as new Lycan leader Marius and fierce vampire Semira, respectively. Charles Dance of ‘Game of Thrones’ fame will reprise his role as the vampire elder Thomas. Bradley James, Peter Andersson, James Faulkner, Daisy Head, and Clementine Nicholson make up the rest of the cast.

The upcoming film will mark Foerster’s directorial debut. She previously directed television episodes for series such as ‘Criminal Minds, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior’, ‘Army Wives’, ‘Unforgettable’, ‘Madam Secretary’ and ‘Outlander’.

Meanwhile, Beckinsale previously revealed a poster of herself as Selene on Twitter. She was clad in winter wear and was brandishing a gun. The 43-year old English actress was first introduced as the vampire death dealer in the 2003 action-horror film ‘Underworld’, directed by Len Wiseman.

The first film in the series received generally negative reviews and earned $95.71 million worldwide on a budget of $22 million, according to Box Office Mojo. Despite the lukewarm reception, a sequel entitled ‘Underworld: Evolution’ was released on 2006. Although Beckinsale skipped out of the third installment ‘Underworld: Rise of the Lycans’, she returned as Selene in 2012’s ‘Underworld: Awakening’.

‘Underworld: Blood Wars’ is an upcoming action-horror film scheduled to premiere in theaters on January 6, 2017. It is directed by Anna Foerster and written by Cory Goodman. It is the sequel to the 2012 film ‘Underworld: Awakening’ and produced by Lakeshore Entertainment, Screen Gems, and Sketch Films.
