GDACS rated the Oct. 20 earthquake near Vanuatu green, indicating its assessment pointed to limited humanitarian consequences for people in the area.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the magnitude 6.3 quake at 12:20 a.m. ET (04:20 UTC) Tuesday, Oct. 20, and placed it 197 kilometers northwest of Port-Olry. GDACS listed the event at a depth of 16 kilometers.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) said no tsunami warning, advisory, watch or threat was in effect. EconoTimes previously reported on the quake and the center's initial no-threat assessment.
GDACS said its rating drew on the quake's magnitude, the people affected and their vulnerability. The system cautions that its data are for guidance and should be checked against other sources before decisions are made.
