Volkswagen is preparing to make a major push into the small electric vehicle (EV) market with plans to launch a new lineup in 2026. The German automaker aims to secure a 20% share of this growing segment and achieve annual sales in the hundreds of thousands over the medium term.
The new electric urban car family will consist of four models: two under the Volkswagen brand, one from Cupra, and one from Skoda. Volkswagen’s offerings will include the Polo, a compact hatchback, and the Cross Concept, a small SUV. Cupra will introduce the sporty Raval hatchback, while Skoda will debut the Epiq, a city-focused SUV.
Each of these vehicles will start at around €25,000 ($29,300), making them competitive options in the affordable EV market. Built on Volkswagen’s shared platform, the models will incorporate advanced driver assistance features, connected software, and premium technologies typically reserved for higher-end cars. They will also use Volkswagen’s new battery-cell technology, providing driving ranges of up to 450 kilometers on a single charge.
By entering the small EV segment with affordable pricing, modern features, and strong range, Volkswagen is positioning itself as a key player in the transition to electric mobility. The company’s strategy reflects growing demand for compact, budget-friendly EVs that combine practicality with advanced technology.
With the launch of the Polo, Cross Concept, Cupra Raval, and Skoda Epiq, Volkswagen is signaling a clear commitment to electrification and accessibility. As competition in the EV sector intensifies, this move could strengthen Volkswagen’s position in Europe and beyond, appealing to both first-time EV buyers and urban drivers seeking efficient and connected mobility solutions.
