Wabtec said Nov. 2 it finalized a long-term, roughly $390 million agreement with Transnet Engineering to help keep South Africa’s D43 and D44 freight locomotives available and dependable. Wabtec’s announcement
Wabtec valued the contract at about $390 million and called it a Material and Technical Support Agreement. The company said the work aims to improve how often the locomotives are ready to run, shorten maintenance turnaround times and strengthen fleet management over their service lives.
The package combines components and technical expertise with predictive maintenance, including the Expert-on-Alert platform, which tracks locomotive condition. The companies will also collaborate on technical work, share knowledge and pursue localization initiatives.
Transnet Engineering Chief Executive Bessie Mabunda said greater reliability and availability could improve freight services, help revive freight activity and make South Africa more competitive in logistics.
