Wargaming, one of the prominent names in online gaming, has partnered with bitcoin payment processor BitPay and will start accepting bitcoin for virtual gold (Wargaming's currency for in-game power-ups) purchases. The service is being rolled out to the players in the United States at the moment.
“We're excited to help bring bitcoin to Wargaming's players. Bitcoin is built for online experiences like gaming, and we're committed to helping companies like Wargaming use this technology make those experiences more seamless, secure, and fun for users”, BitPay said in a blog post.
Wargaming is the creator of 15 titles in strategy-based massively-multiplayer online (MMO) gaming, including World of Tanks, World of Warships, and World of Warplanes. The games are all free to play, and players can customize their gaming with new weapons and vehicles.
Bitcoin integration will take Wargaming a step further to reach the growing base of users playing its MMO games in the U.S. It will give the players an alternative payment option and a simpler, faster way to get the virtual gold they need.
BitPay further said that this integration is also one of the first to make Payment Protocol wallets the default way to pay invoices.
“Customers using Payment Protocol wallets to add to their virtual gold holdings can send bitcoin to a Wargaming bitcoin invoice more securely and broadcast their transactions to the Bitcoin network in less time”, it explained.
Although customers can check out with any bitcoin wallet, Wargaming's integration collects a return address beforehand in case there are any transaction issues, which reduces the need for back and forth between customers and Wargaming's support team.
