France’s weekend demonstrations drew fewer people for a third consecutive week as high schools prepared to resume classes, and economist Renaud Foucart told France 24 the protests might fade.

France 24 reported Monday that attendance at weekend demonstrations had declined for three weeks in a row. The outlet said most high schools were preparing to return to classes while calls for new blockades continued.

Foucart, who is a senior lecturer in economics at Lancaster University, told France 24 that he expects the demonstrations to lose momentum. He linked that outlook to the government’s lack of a parliamentary majority, which he said makes it difficult to identify whom protesters are challenging.

Foucart said sustained turnout over the past month showed that people had grown dissatisfied with France’s political debate. France 24 published the interview Monday, Nov. 2.
