‘Wonder Woman’ would have featured Christina Hendricks in the lead role, according to Nicolas Winding Refn. The director expressed his choice to play the popular DC heroine in place of Gal Gadot, who is set to return for a standalone film under the direction of Patty Jenkins. Meanwhile, new photographs of Gadot in her complete superhero costume were recently leaked.
Jenkins may be helming Gadot’s upcoming standalone film in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) but this didn’t stop Refn from expressing his thoughts on what could have been his own version of Wonder Woman’s solo outing on the big screen. According to Maxim, the Danish filmmaker was interested in bringing the iconic superheroine to life with another actress in mind.
He said that his concept of Wonder Woman would be portrayed by Hendricks. The 41-year old actress starred in his 2011 neo-noir thriller film ‘Drive’ alongside Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan. The Emmy-nominee is also best known for her role as Joan Holloway on AMC’s drama television series ‘Mad Men’.
Although Refn will not be directing the upcoming ‘Wonder Woman’ film starring Gal Gadot, he continued to set his sights at helming a blockbuster superhero film. According to Business Insider, he expressed his enthusiasm at directing one featuring Batgirl. He said, "God, I would love to make one, it would probably be great fun… I just don't know when it's going to happen. I very much enjoy my freedom creatively, but I also would love to make one of those big Hollywood films that costs a lot of money and has a lot of people running around with cell phones and all that insanity.”
He added, "What ones are left?... You know the one I want to do? I want to make Batgirl. Let’s get Warner working on it.”
It was speculated that Batgirl will appear in a planned standalone Harley Quinn film starring Margot Robbie following the release of the much-anticipated ‘Suicide Squad’ scheduled to premiere on August 5, 2016.
Meanwhile, new set photographs of Gadot in full costume as Wonder Woman have been released. According to Sciencefiction.com, a bonus feature from ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – Ultimate Edition’ contained a featurette documentary entitled ‘Wonder Woman: The Warrior, The Myth, The Wonder’.
It covers exclusive footage and images for Gadot’s upcoming solo film including images of Gadot clad in her full superhero costume complete with a detailed cloak that resembled blue feathers.
‘Wonder Woman’ is an upcoming action-adventure and fantasy film directed by Patty Jenkins and written by Jason Fuchs. It is scheduled to be released on June 2, 2017 in the United States.
It will feature the return of Gal Gadot as the titular superheroine. She first appeared as Wonder Woman on Zack Snyder’s ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’. Although her performance was praised, the film itself received generally negative reviews from critics. It was also considered a box office flop despite earning $872.66 million worldwide following its release on March 2016.
