‘Blade Runner 2’ finally received its official title ‘Blade Runner 2049’. The sequel starring Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford in the lead role is scheduled to premiere in theaters on October 2017 and not the previously announced January 2018 date.
According to The Verge, the highly-anticipated sequel to Ridley Scott's 1982 science-fiction tech-noir classic film of the same name is officially titled ‘Blade Runner 2049’. Other than the film’s title and principal cast members, not much else is known about the follow-up.
The press release from Warner Bros. only stated, "Story details are not being revealed." The sequel is set to feature the return of leading man Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard, a member of special police operatives known as Blade Runners.
Scott’s original film depicted a dystopian Los Angeles in the year 2019 with genetically engineered replicants made to look indistinguishable from real humans. These replicants were banned from earth. Blade Runners were tasked at hunting down rogue replicants who evaded the ban. The plot focuses on Rick as he pursues a group of replicants hiding out in the city.
Director Denis Villeneuve admitted the challenges of adapting Scott’s cult classic during an interview at the Venice Film Festival. He said, "First of all, it's not possible to live up to the original… It's Ridley Scott. It's one of the best sci-fi films, one of the best films in the past 50 years."
He continued, "For me, what terrorizes me right now is what I'm doing is taking Blade Runner and making it my own, and that is horrific... It’s still the same universe, we are still in the same dream, but it’s mine, so it’s like I have no idea how you people will react."
According to The Numbers, Scott’s film the film earned $33.14 million worldwide against a production budget of $28 million. It was released on June 25, 1982 to mixed reviews but quickly gained a cult following. It was also selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 1993.
Ryan Gosling joins Ford in the new cast together with Robin Wright, Ana de Armas, Dave Bautista, Barkhad Abdi, Jared Leto, Lennie James, and Mackenzie Davis. Villeneuve directs a screenplay prepared by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green.
According to Engadget, the film is set to be released in theaters on October 6, 2017. It is set to take place 30 years after the events of the first film, specifically in the year 2049. In addition to premiering in theaters, it will also be available in VR.
‘Blade Runner 2’ is an upcoming science-fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green. It is produced by Warner Bros., Alcon Entertainment, 16:14 Entertainment, Scott Free Productions, Thunderbird Films, and Torridon Films.
