Alan Rai

Industry Fellow, University of Technology Sydney
Alan is a Senior Economist in the Strategy and Economic Analysis team at the AEMC. The AEMC is the principal advisor to the Council of Australian Governments on policy issues related to Australia’s electricity and gas markets. Alan joined the AEMC in September 2015, and has led various projects including the integration of renewables into the grid, emissions reduction policies, and wholesale and retail electricity market design. Alan has also held an acting Chief Economist role at the AEMC.

Alan is also a Fellow at the Australian Institute of Energy, a Senior Research Fellow at Macquarie University, and an Industry Fellow at the University of Technology Sydney, where he teaches postgraduate courses in financial risk management and derivatives pricing & trading. Alan has published work in top peer-reviewed journals on asset pricing and financial market liquidity, and more recently on future trends in the electricity generation sector, with a particular interest in the interaction between climate risk and financial risk.

Prior roles to the AEMC include Senior Economist at the CSIRO's Energy Technology division, and an Assistant Professor in Finance at Macquarie University. Alan started his career at the Reserve Bank of Australia, where he spent 7 years covering Australian and U.S. government and corporate bond markets, credit derivative markets, and asset-backed security markets.

Alan holds a PhD in Economics from the University of New South Wales, and a first class Honours degree in Finance and Economics from Macquarie University.
