Marie Sonnette est maîtresse de conférences en sociologie à l'Université d'Angers, responsable de la licence "Sciences sociales", parcours "Animation sociale, culturelle, éducative et de loisirs". Elle a soutenu une thèse de sociologie en octobre 2013, sous la direction de Bruno Péquignot à l’Université Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris 3, qui portait sur les engagements politiques de rappeurs dans la France contemporaine. Elle travaille aujourd'hui à la réalisation de plusieurs enquêtes sur les publics, l'économie et la légitimation des musiques hip-hop, en partenariat avec le Département des Etudes, de la prospective et de la statistique du ministère de la Culture. Elle est membre du conseil scientifique du Centre National de la Musique.
