Early posts about inner-screen damage are raising questions about the iPhone Duo’s durability, but the reports do not establish a common defect or show how often failures occur.

The device went on sale in the United States Oct. 23 at a starting price of $1,999. Apple lists a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display, and says the hinge supports the display’s center when open. EconoTimes previously covered the U.S. launch.

An Australian Reddit user posting as u/Midnight_Slump said the screen cracked along the hinge after about six hours and fewer than 20 openings. “As I continued opening it, I heard an audible crack, and the screen broke right along the hinge,” the user wrote. Reddit moderators said their review of photos and Apple documentation verified the damaged device and subsequent service, but not the cause. The owner said an Apple Store replaced the phone.

A separate Reddit user described a dark line near the crease after about six hours and said Apple Support arranged an express replacement. No moderator verification accompanied that post in the information available.

MacRumors reported images of other damaged displays, including some described as coming from demo devices in China. The outlet said the circumstances behind most images were unknown, so they do not establish a shared defect or cause.

Apple’s hinge troubleshooting guidance, published Oct. 23, lists unexpected noise, looseness and difficulty opening or closing the phone fully. It advises replacing the inner display assembly if troubleshooting does not resolve or isolate an issue, but does not identify a cause for the reported cracks.

MacRumors also reported that a review unit completed more than 32,000 folds without a noticeable change in hinge feel. The test used one phone in a case, and the machine did not fully close it on every cycle. The reports provide no verified count of damaged customer devices or confirmed cause.
