The iPhone Mini X made headlines last year when leaks about the supposed device started making its round on the web. What gave weight to the rumors is that its source was Olixar, a case-maker that has a history of correctly predicting smartphone designs before they come out.
Among those that it got right in the past are the iPhone X, Galaxy S9, and Galaxy Note 8. So it came to no surprise that when Olixar said that the iPhone Mini X is being made behind the doors of Apple, reliable publications started writing about the device. Olixar was so confident with its information that it started producing cases for the upcoming smartphone, Business Times reported.
However, the same leaker was the one to announce last year that Apple has abandoned the idea of producing the iPhone Mini X. In its place stepped in the company’s desire to produce a larger smartphone to complement the iPhone X. Months later, iPhone XS Max hit the market, proving yet again the accuracy of Olixar’s inside information.
iPhone Mini X was touted to be the budget-friendly phone that Apple was trying to make in an attempt to appeal to the midrange market. This desire has been previously stated by Apple CEO Tim Cook where he said that they wanted people to see them as beyond a luxury company that only the rich can afford.
As for the exact reason why Apple discarded the iPhone Mini X project, there’s still no news about that front. With Huawei dominating the midrange market and taking a chunk out of Apple’s revenue, it’s surprising that the company didn’t stand toe to toe against its competitor in this regard.
At the moment, Apple is losing to Huawei on the simple grounds of the former’s products being much more expensive than those offered by the latter, CNBC reported. And with Huawei increasing the quality of its flagships further, Apple will need to step up its game to catch up with its competition. Hopefully, the Cupertino-based tech giant can come up with a better concept than the iPhone Mini X to take back some of the profits that it lost to Huawei.
