Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Lieberman said his party would recommend Yashar party leader Gadi Eisenkot to form Israel’s next government, adding support to opposition efforts after an inconclusive election.

The Jerusalem Post reported that Lieberman announced his party’s plan at a news conference. Anadolu Agency reported that he also ruled out joining a government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and rejected a minority government.

Anadolu described possible defections from Netanyahu’s Likud party as a route that could help Eisenkot form an alternative government. A five-leader opposition pact had left open who would lead a future government; the opposition needs 61 seats to govern.

Anadolu reported that President Isaac Herzog’s consultations with party leaders were expected to begin Wednesday, Nov. 4. The new Knesset is scheduled to convene Nov. 10.
