‘Narcos’ Season 3 Cast, Updates: Pedro Pascal Returns as DEA Agent Javier Peña in First Production Photograph as Filming for Netflix Hit Begins

Pedro Pascal stars in Netflix's 'Narcos' Season 3

‘Narcos’ actor Pedro Pascal is set to return as DEA agent Javier Peña as revealed in the very first production photograph released by Netflix. Filming for the season 3 has recently begun.

According to the Independent, production for the incoming season of ‘Narcos’ is currently underway. Netflix recently released the first photograph for season 3 featuring Pascal’s return as the DEA agent Javier Peña. In the official photograph, Peña is seen on a podium flanked by a seal of the United States America presumably making a statement following the death of the notorious Columbian drug lord Pablo Escobar, who their agency has been tracking for the longest time.

Pascal was first introduced as Peña in the first two seasons of the Netflix web television series together with co-star Boyd Holbrook, who played his partner DEA agent Steve Murphy. The 41-year old Chilean-born American actor is best known for his portrayal of Oberyn Martell in HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’. Holbrook’s return to the Netflix show is yet to be confirmed as of the present.

Season 3 will reportedly feature the rise of a new kingpin, specifically Pablo’s long-time rival in the drug trade Gilberto Orejuela of the Cali Cartel. Executive Producer Eric Newman said during a previous interview, “The show was never about Pablo Escobar… It was always about the drug war, and the drug war continues on. In fact, it continues on into the present.”

Wagner Moura portrayed the infamous Colombian drug lord in the series. The 40-year old Brazilian film, television, and stage actor said that Escobar was just the beginning of a story putting focus on notorious drug wars. He said, “Having Narcos after Pablo and having the show strong enough to keep going, it’s very important, not only artistically because it’s a show that’s original and cool, but it’s also a very political show.”

Escobar met his demise in season 2’s finale, entitled “Al Fin Cayó!" Damian Alcazar’s Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela was also featured as Escobar’s primary rivals in season 2.

According to Screen Crush, the real agent Peña explained the difference between Escobar’s Medellin Cartel and Orejuela’s Cali Cartel saying, “The Medellin Cartel was the Wild Wild West and Cali was businesslike. They were accountants, professional money-launderers. They were more sophisticated and very different cartels. Cali moved a lot of dope and sent more to the U.S.”

‘Narcos’ is a crime-thriller and biographical web television series created by Chris Brancato, Carlo Bernard, and Doug Miro for Netflix. Netflix renewed the series for a third and fourth season last September 6, 2016.
