Bad news for fans of “Elder Scrolls: Skyrim” mods, the PlayStation 4 will only have 1GB of space available for the add-ons. Xbox One owners are fine, though, thanks to the 5GB of space that they are getting. It might not be as much as what PCs are capable of, but it’s something.
The news came by Bethesda’s announcement talking about the upcoming “Skyrim” remaster. In the post, the company reminisced about the days when the game was first announced as having gone “Gold” and seeing the live-action trailer for the title. Amid the expressions of nostalgia, the developers slipped in the tiny caveat regarding the limited mod space.
To be fair, Sony had originally wanted to limit available storage for mods at only 900MB, so it is a little higher now than before. However, for those who are wondering why some players might take issue with 1GB provided for PS4 mods, some of the most popular creations can actually surpass several gigabytes. This effectively limits the size of the mods that PS4 owners can download.
On that note, Sony has also imposed restrictions on the kinds of mods that will be available on their console. Players can only get content that uses in-game, vanilla assets and there will be no scripting involved. As a result, the mod pool that players can choose from now is limited to things like better lighting and slightly improved textures.
As Eurogamer points out, however, Xbox One owners might actually encounter more problems despite the 5GB of mod space that they have access to since file restrictions don’t apply to them. With more choices come the dilemma of which of those they will get, which might just overwhelm some.
Then again, 5GB for “Skyrim” is more than the 2GB that they’ll be getting for “Fallout 4” on the Xbox One. Gamers will just have to take what they can get at this point.
