U.S. President Donald Trump announced that a major renovation of Washington’s historic East Potomac Golf Links will begin on September 1, with plans to transform the century-old public golf course into what he described as one of the finest golf destinations in the world.
Trump revealed the project after touring the site on Sunday alongside Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and renowned golf course architect Tom Fazio. In a post on Truth Social, the president said the waterfront property offers exceptional potential due to its scenic location and panoramic views of Washington, D.C.’s iconic monuments.
According to Trump, officials concluded that the existing course requires a complete overhaul. He described the current layout as “virtually unplayable” and said construction would move quickly once work begins in early September. The redevelopment is expected to modernize the public golf facility while enhancing its appeal for golfers and visitors alike.
The East Potomac Golf Links renovation comes after legal challenges sought to halt the project. Earlier this year, a nonprofit organization and two Washington residents filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration in an effort to stop the redevelopment plans.
However, the dispute was resolved in May when the Trump administration reached an agreement with the National Links Trust, the nonprofit that currently manages the city’s public golf courses. Under the deal, the organization will continue operating East Potomac Golf Links until federal authorities begin the renovation. The agreement also grants the nonprofit a new long-term lease to operate and redevelop Washington’s other public golf facilities, Langston Golf Course and Rock Creek Park Golf Course.
The golf course project aligns with the Trump administration’s broader initiative to reshape and upgrade prominent U.S. cultural and recreational landmarks. In addition to public golf facilities, the administration has pursued changes involving museums, monuments, national parks, and arts institutions as part of a wider effort to redefine the nation’s public spaces.
Once completed, the redesigned East Potomac Golf Links is expected to become a premier public golf destination, reflecting the administration’s vision of creating a world-class course in the heart of the U.S. capital.
