Rumors and leaks about a foldable Samsung smartphone have been around for almost a decade. While there have been some clips of prototypes showing how the concept could work, no commercial product has been released. Now, recent reports suggest that a curved Samsung battery with up to 6,000mAh of juice will come with the rumored Galaxy X device.

This year, Samsung might finally break the streak of broken promises with regards to foldable smartphones, Newsweek reports. This is due to reports about a new kind of high-capacity battery, which can have up to 6,000mAh of power.

The publication cited a recent feature by BGR, which noted how a commercial curved Samsung battery might have been created. This is relevant because inflexible internal components have been among the biggest challenges to creating foldable phones in the past. Either the batteries would have to become smaller or the devices would have to become bigger.

If the rumors about the Galaxy X prove true, it’s likely that Samsung had to make a few compromises with regards to the design of the device. Reports about the company showing select individuals a prototype earlier this year sparked new interest in the concept.

While specific details with regards to the device are still up in the air, there have been speculations based on available data. For example, The Next Web reports that it could be priced at $1,900 or higher. Gizmodo also recently pointed out that it might not even fold all the way, which would certainly be an issue if it’s marketed as a smartphone.

For its part, the South Korean giant has made no confirmation either with regards to the so-called curved Samsung battery or even the existence of the foldable phone. Given that there are reports of rival companies developing their own foldable devices, Samsung’s reluctance to share specific details is understandable.
