AMD revealed few details on their highly anticipated Navi GPU with 7-nanometer architecture. The upcoming component had gotten a great deal of expectation among fans, especially when it was reported as Sony’s choice for their next-generation console PlayStation 5.
Since late 2018, pieces of leaked information revealed that the AMD Navi GPU would be one of the components in PS5. So it was not surprising when investors and analysts were most excited to hear more about it during the company’s earnings call on Tuesday.
AMD President and CEO Lisa Su discussed the Navi GPU at length but refrain from giving out many details considering that it will not be released until the second half of 2019. Su confirmed, however, that they are aiming to launch AMD Navi within the third quarter of the year. “Navi is a new architecture for us in gaming. It has a lot of new features, across the Navi architecture,” Su said (via Seeking Alpha). “Things are progressing well. We expect it to launch in the third quarter.”
This means that other technical specifications of the AMD Navi might not be unveiled until the time is close to its actual release. For now, gamers and tech fans can use PS4 Pro’s features and capacity as a reference in building their expectations of the upcoming GPU. Since the Navi is deemed by Sony as a worthy component for a next-generation console, it understandable if fans would anticipate great things from this new GPU.
What Su also confirmed is that the AMD Navi could be cheaper than the currently available Radeon VII variants. “From a positioning standpoint, I probably won't go through it in great detail right now,” Su added. “But it will be positioned below where, for example, our Radeon VII's is position today from a price point standpoint.”
With AMD Navi coming out in the second half of 2019, gaming fans might be wondering if this means PS5 will be released soon, too. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Sony PS4’s lead system architect Mark Cerny recently told Wired that PS5 would not arrive this year.
