More reports suggesting that Apple is close to launching its first AR/VR headset are appearing in the wild. The tech giant is said to be close to “wrapping up” its development of the all-new operating system to power the upcoming mixed-reality headset.
The latest edition of the Power On newsletter by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests the Apple AR/VR headset’s operating system could be named “realityOS.” And the development of its first version, reportedly codenamed Oak, is “wrapping up.” That means the team behind the operating system is on track with the reported retail release of the headset, which various reports say could be sometime in the first half of 2023.
The same report said realityOS is expected to offer mixed-reality versions of Apple stock apps, such as Messages, FaceTime, and Maps. While the name of the operating system is not set in stone yet, references to a project called “rOS” tied to the ARKit were spotted way back in 2017. But the full “realityOS” name re-emerged in App Store upload logs last February.
Various names with the “Reality” branding appeared in several trademark applications last August, giving Apple fans some clues on the potential names of the first AR/VR headset. The said filings mentioned possible product names like “Reality Pro” and “Reality One.”
Power On reiterates that the Apple AR/VR headset is slated to be a high-end niche product that could launch with a price tag between $2,000 to $3,000. It is expected to include an M2 chip with enough power to support a Mac computer, which means the headset should be able to operate without being tethered to a computer.
Reports citing supply chain chatter claimed Apple may be gearing up to start the mixed reality headset’s production by March 2023. DigiTimes said the tech giant could unveil the device by April. This timeline slightly contradicts information from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s research, which suggested that Apple could hold a “media event” for the headset as early as January 2023. Both sources, however, agree that Apple plans a low annual shipment target for the AR/VR headset.
