“Big Little Lies” season 2 welcomes a major addition to its cast lineup by introducing a new character played by the powerhouse actress Meryl Streep. But is she going to be a thorn to the mom squad from the first installment?
About a year ago, it was confirmed that the multi-awarded actress will play the role of Perry’s (Alexander Skarsgård) mother named Mary Louise Wright in “Big Little Lies” season 2. Her being a mother and a wife is an obvious similarity she has with the original wife club trapped in dysfunctional relationships: Madeline (Reese Witherspoon), her daughter-in-law Celeste (Nicole Kidman), Jane (Shailene Woodley), Renata (Laura Dern), and Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz).
However, it does not seem like her relationship with the quintet will be off to a good start. Streep was first seen as Louise in HBO’s 2019 trailer. In the few seconds of “Big Little Lies” season 2 teaser, Louise tells Celeste, “I wanna know what happened that night.”
The same promo video then cuts to a clip where all five of them in a police lineup wearing the same clothes on the night the abusive Perry died. This means that Louise could pose a threat to the freedom of the five women. “Big Little Lies” season 2 will pick up from a scene where Detective Quinlan (Merrin Dungey) was spying on them even after the police has ruled that Perry's death was an accident. This means that there could be more police investigation to ensue.

Louise’s backstory is still a mystery. So even if common logic suggests she might be wanting to avenge Perry’s death, “Big Little Lies” season 2 might just have a major plot twist in the end. And, after all, Louise could be a surprise ally to Celeste and the others even though Madeline was seen attempting to throw ice cream at her.
The HBO show was initially planned to just be a miniseries after covering most of the stories from its source novel with the same title by Liane Moriarty. But after gaining massive positive response from critics and viewers and bagging a long list of awards including five Emmys in 2017, HBO ordered the production of “Big Little Lies” season 2. Meanwhile, fans still have to wait for the official premiere date this year.
