Parodies of popular TV shows are a good source of laughter, but it becomes even more special when the actual cast members reprise their roles in said comedy contents. Richard Madden and Keeley Hawes did just that for Comic Relief in honor of the Red Nose Day 2019. Of course, they chose a skit that would also mess with the thoughts of fans waiting for “Bodyguard” season 2.
The spoof not only hilariously creates an alternative ending to the miniseries, but it also touches on a favorite subject a possible “Bodyguard” season 2 twist. Madden reprises his role as David Budd in the parody. He is providing security detail for the Prime Minister played by Joanna Lumley. “Line of Duty” star Adrian Dunbar appears for an important cameo as he discovers a very alive Home Secretary Julia Montague (Hawes) sassily lying in the car’s trunk.
Montague then harshly removes the Lumley’s Prime Minister from the car to exchange banters with Budd that pokes fun at a popular “Bodyguard” season 2 theory. As Montague rides the car, Budd tells her, “You’re dead.” The supposedly dead character then responds in a cryptic tone, “Am I?”
The real Montague died in the middle of the six-episode miniseries after a terrorist attack. However, TV series these days often serve a big resurrection plot twist for major characters leading some fans to believe that Montague might return in “Bodyguard” season 2. In a previous interview with the Guardian, Hawes admitted that many fans are in “total denial” of Montague’s fate. “I was very upfront, and everybody just thought we were bluffing and bluffing. It just seemed to add fuel to it, the more we said, ‘No, she’s really gone,’” Hawes said.
“Bodyguard” season 2 is not set in stone yet, but series creator Jed Mercurio hopes it happens. “It would be great if there was a second season. We’d love to do more. We appreciate there’s a real hunger from fans to watch it. There are a lot of logistics in terms of setting up a second season and we’re just working through those,” Mercurio said in the INTV conference (via Deadline).
