Briferendum Aftermath Series: EU leaders remind Britain of trade boundaries

The European leaders have issued a stark warning to the United Kingdom after it became apparent that the new administration in the United States will have a completely different approach towards the UK and the EU, when compared to the previous administration. The 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump welcomed Brexit, slammed the EU by calling it a vehicle for Germany, and said that his country stands ready to maintain a special relationship with the United Kingdom and ready to make a bilateral trade deal.

The European Union’s foreign affairs commissioner Federica Mogherini said, "It's absolutely clear on the EU side that as long as a country is a member state of the EU, which is something the UK is at the moment, there are no negotiations bilaterally on any trade agreement with third parties. This is in the treaties and this is valid for all member states as long as they remain member states, until the very last day.”

The European Union leaders are very worried and suffering from a major dilemma; whether to allow the UK a good deal or not. They need the UK, when it comes to global politics and security but cannot make it lucrative for other countries to leave the European Union. Once the Article 50 is triggered, it would become clearer what the approach is going to be.

Meanwhile, the British Prime Minister Theresa May became the first foreign leader to meet Donald Trump after his inauguration.
