After waiting for over seven years, video game fans now know when “Cyberpunk 2077” will be exactly released. The game will hit the shelves in the spring of next year, and that could be months before the next-generation consoles will be available. This then leads to the question of whether or not CD Projekt Red has plans of making the game compatible with two generations of PlayStation and Xbox consoles.
‘Cyberpunk 2077’: CD Projekt Red focuses on building game for current-gen consoles
The answers that developers have given about this topic, so far, are quite open-ended. Officially, “Cyberpunk 2077” is a video game designed for current-generation consoles. But CD Projekt Red stated on several occasions that they are not closing any doors for possibly launching the role-playing game on PlayStation 5 and the product of Xbox Project Scarlett.
Back in June, CD Projekt Red senior level designer Miles Tost told Destructoid that they are focusing on building “Cyberpunk 2077” for the currently available gaming consoles. Tost also recognized that the game is launching at the final cycles of PS4 and Xbox One, but he added, “That doesn't mean that the current consoles are [dead].”
Fast forward to this month, Tost provided pretty much the same answer. He reiterated in an interview with GamerHubTV that next-gen consoles are not the focus of development right now. However, when the time and the market demand, CD Projekt Red will likely be ready to optimize “Cyberpunk 2077” for new gaming hardware products.
‘Cyberpunk 2077’ release date: Is a Nintendo Switch port possible?
“Cyberpunk 2077” is now confirmed to go live on April 16, 2020, and will be available on Windows PC, Google Stadia, PS4, and Xbox One. Unfortunately for Nintendo Switch players, CD Projekt Red's John Mamais told GameSpot that a Switch port is “probably not” happening. But it was also curious that Mamais recalled that a game as huge as “The Witcher 3” was surprisingly launched on Nintendo’s hybrid portable console.
CD Projekt Red has repeatedly said it is focusing on perfecting the game in time for its release date. But fans cannot help but wonder about the post-launch contents. To this, developers reiterated their dislike of overwhelming microtransactions. But it does not mean there will not be paid contents after April 16, 2020. The developers do not have specific information to share yet, but they mentioned the possibility of using the same approach they had for “The Witcher 3’s” DLCs and expansions.
