“Game of Thrones” is supposed to be a fictional property with hardly any impact on the real world save for weddings or birthdays that take inspiration from the HBO show. However, it would appear that the dark fantasy series is actually taking on President Donald Trump himself in a Twitter feud. On top of that, it could result in an actual trademark battle.
It all started when Trump sent out a Tweet that was not unlike all the other ones he has sent before. It contained a photo of the president in the background with a caption that reads “Sanctions are Coming.” The caption was written with a font similar to what “Game of Thrones” uses and pertains to sanctions that will be imposed on Iran.

As expected, the folks behind “Game of Thrones” were not happy with the connection that the president had made with the show and his policies. In response to the post, HBO released a statement that basically derides the message that Trump was trying to convey, The BBC reports.
"We were not aware of this messaging and would prefer our trademark not be misappropriated for political purposes," the response reads.
On top of this exchange triggering a Twitter war between fans of the show and avid followers of the president, there is also the question of whether or not this could constitute trademark infringement. As Wired notes regarding the “Game of Thrones” issue, however, this might not be the case. This is with regards to the Tweet that HBO sent out, which reads, “How do you say trademark misuse in Dothraki?”

Most are simply taking this response as a joking reaction to what is essentially a serious political declaration from the president. There will probably be no lawsuit stemming from this potential “Game of Thrones” trademark infringement. If there was, it would just add to the list of legal problems that the president is currently facing.
