Dublin, Oct. 18, 2016 -- Research and Markets has announced the addition of the "Global Enhanced oil Recovery" report to their offering.
The key players in the Enhanced Oil Recovery market include Exxon Mobil Corporation, Chevron Corporation, Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Petronas, BP plc, Cenovus Energy Inc., Statoil ASA and OAO LUKOIL among others
Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is a method through which crude oil is extracted from the earth's crust. Commonly, it is also called as tertiary recovery method as it is applied after primary and secondary recovery techniques. Primary recovery accounts for >15% of crude oil, whereas secondary recovery contributes >50% of crude oil. Through the application of enhanced oil recovery techniques more than 70% of the crude oil can be easily extracted.
Thermal injection, gas injection and chemical injection are the most commonly used EOR techniques. Generally, thermal injection is the most widely used EOR technique as it reduces the viscosity of the heavy crude oil, which cannot flow on its own. Steam and hot water are used to increase the temperature of the crude oil, which in turn lowers down the viscosity of the crude oil. In-situ combustion and steam injection are the commonly used thermal injection methods. Steam injection methods are further categorized into cyclic steam stimulation, steam assisted gravity drainage and steam flooding.
The gas injection method utilizes carbon dioxide (CO2) to extract crude oil from the reservoir. This technology is expected to rise at a significant rate in future owing to disposal of green house gas and increase in the recovery of crude oil. Large quantity of CO2 is easily captured from power generation and industrial sector, thereby making gas injection a prominent technology for extraction of crude oil.
The chemical injection method utilizes alkali, surfactant and polymer to extract crude oil. This type of technology can be easily applied on both sandstone and carbonate formations. Vast applications of EOR are found on matured reserves. In the current scenario, more than 60% of the total crude oil production comes from matured reserves.
