Global Geo-political Series: Lavrov warns U.S. of retaliation against closure of diplomatic compounds while Mogherini warns against backing away from Iran deal

Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov has warned the United States that Russia is working on retaliatory measures for the closure of two Russian diplomatic compounds in the United States that remains unresolved till date. In December 2016 after Donald Trump seized victory in the election, then the US President Barrack Obama expelled 35 Russian diplomats from the country and seized two Russian diplomatic compounds in response to Russia’s alleged interference in the US election and pushed the relations between the two nuclear super-powers to the lowest since the cold war. The issue still remains unsolved even after 6 months of Trump administration.

Speaking of the situation, Mr. Lavrov said, “This situation is just outrageous….I believe that it is just shameful for such a great country as the US, which champions international law, to leave the situation in suspension….. We are thinking about some particular steps now”. He didn’t clarify on the measures that might be taken by Moscow but stressed that he did not believe those steps should be publicly discussed at the moment. He mentioned, however, that Moscow would seek justice and demand that international norms regarding diplomatic property be observed.

Speaking at the Joint news conference with Mr. Lavrov, The European Union's foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini warned Washington against backing away from the nuclear deal. Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia plus Germany signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on July 14, 2015, and started implementing it on January 16, 2016. The UN Security Council later unanimously endorsed a resolution that effectively turned the JCPOA into international law.

During the election campaign, President Trump called the deal a disaster and said that he would scrap it once he gets to the office. While he hasn’t scrapped it yet, his administration is reviewing the deal. Ms. Mogherini has issued a warning against the Trump administration, which has already backed away from Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and Paris Climate Accord (PAC) saying that nuclear deal doesn’t belong to any one country but the international community, "The nuclear deal doesn't belong to one country, it belongs to the international community……..We have the responsibility to make sure that this continues to be implemented".
