Lindsay Shookus and Ben Affleck’s breakup was partially caused by the actor’s battle with alcoholism, according to sources. There are claims that the “Saturday Night Live” producer somehow “felt helpless” while trying to encourage the “Justice League” actor to get better.
It was confirmed in August that Shookus and Affleck had broken up after a year of dating. While the two remained mum about their relationship and their split, sources claimed that the actor’s ongoing struggle with staying sober contributed to their fallout.
Prior to their breakup, a source of Entertainment Tonight said Affleck started drinking again and then-girlfriend Shookus “was encouraging him to stop.” The same source added, “At that point, he still didn't seem to feel he had a real problem. Sadly, he spiraled very quickly, and Lindsay felt helpless."
Shortly after receiving her third Emmy win as a producer of “Saturday Night Live” this week, PEOPLE reported that Shookus still cares for her ex. “Lindsay will always care about Ben’s health and wants the best for him, but right now she’s focusing on herself, her work and her daughter,” another source said.
Before Affleck’s estranged wife, Jennifer Garner, staged an intervention that led to the actor’s third stint in rehab. Shookus also reportedly tried to convince Affleck to get help. “He didn't want to be controlled and ended things with Lindsay,” according to an insider.
Affleck entered rehab last Aug. 22 and will be checking out after 30 days. While the program requires him to temporarily live in the facility, the actor is allowed to go to the gym or visit his home in Pacific Palisades from time to time. And aside from Shookus and Garner, a third woman is apparently involved in Affleck’s battle with alcoholism.
Not long after Affleck and Shookus broke up, he was spotted going out with Shauna Sexton, which then sparked dating rumors. Though the status of their relationship has yet to be confirmed, they seem to have maintained their communication as the 22-year-old Playboy model was recently seen visiting Affleck in the rehab facility.
