Sony Corporation is now exploring blockchain technology and filed for a patent related to non-fungible tokens or NFT. It is looking into this area to allow transfers of digital assets between games and consoles.

It was said that Sony Corporation is making this move as it is aiming to make assets more interoperable not just between games but in hardware as well, such as computers, consoles, and virtual reality (VR) headsets. This is a blockchain technology project of the company with a focus on NFT integration for its own PlayStation console.

According to CoinDesk, as part of this project, Sony Interactive Entertainment filed for a patent that will allow transfers of NFTs between different consoles and game titles. With the new patent, users of PlayStation and other Sony products will get to experience and enjoy interoperable Web3 gameplay.

Sony's patent will allow gamers to move in-game assets to other devices, including computers, mobile phones, and tablets. It was also stated in its patent application that the NFT could be used between devices from different generations, like from the fourth generation of PlayStation console to PS5.

Moreover, the Japanese company also stipulated in its patent application that transfers of digital assets will also be possible beyond the Sony ecosystem, such as Microsoft's Xbox or cloud-based games.

"The standardized format may be readable to insert the digital asset in different computer simulations that may include different video games of different titles," Decrypt quoted Sony as saying in its patent filing. "Additionally, or alternatively, readable via different video game platforms such as, for example, PlayStation and Xbox."

Meanwhile, Sony Corporation's NFT patent application only shows it is making a Web3 path for its PlayStation gaming device. In fact, it was noted that the company has been stockpiling NFT-related patent applications recently, which points to a blockchain future for its gaming business.
