“Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” is Showtime’s new spinoff series and the cast and director for the drama have been announced. Recently, it was revealed that “Game of Thrones” favorite star, Natalie Dormer, was also added in the cast lineup as the lead star.
According to Variety, Natalie Dormer will play Magda, a supernatural demon who can transform into anyone that she chooses. She is a smart and charismatic chameleon but her foes should beware because while she is a loyal ally, she is a dangerous enemy.
Throughout “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels,” it was revealed that Natalie Dormer, as Magda, will manifest in a number of disguises in the story. The drama is a revival of the Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful” horror drama but it will present a new story, setting and characters.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, the synopsis of “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” reads: “Los Angeles of 1938, a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension.”
It continues, “When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) is embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart. ”
Meanwhile, Natalie Dormer will join the previously announced new cast members including Jonathan Nieves, Jessica Garza and Daniel Zovatto. In the past seasons of “Penny Dreadful” some of the folklore characters like Dracula, Frankenstein and Doran Gray were featured and it is interesting to see who would appear in the upcoming spinoff with “The Game of Thrones” star as the lead.
Filming for “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” will begin any time this year but its release date is still uncertain.
