“Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” is in the works and it is a follow-up to the original “Penny Dreadful” series that aired from 2014 to 2016. It will offer new beginnings and a more interesting plot as its setting has been changed for the upcoming spinoff.
The return of the show to Showtime as “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” was announced via Twitter. On Nov. 1, the network tweeted, “#PennyDreadful returns to @Showtime with Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. Set in 1938 Los Angeles, this next chapter will explore a mix of the supernatural within a genuine historical backdrop infused with Mexican-American folklore.”
As can be seen in the announcement, “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” will take place in Los Angeles and set in 1938. Apparently, the drama moved its location from England to L.A. and its time period changed as well. From the early 1900s, the new series will feature stories that happened a few decades later.
Gary Levine, Showtime’s president for programming, stated that they are excited about the “Penny Dreadful” spinoff. “We were so thrilled when John Logan came to us with this wildly original take on the Penny Dreadful mythology that explores both the human spirit and the spirit world here in California,” Variety quoted him as saying.
He added, “’Penny Dreadful: City of Angels’ promises to be an extraordinary saga of familial love set against the terrifying monsters that are around us and within us.”
John Logan will remain as the series’s writer and showrunner but the cast members are not yet confirmed. Thus, fans have to wait for more details to know if the show will retain its original cast or there will be new actors for the roles.
What to expect in “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels?” As per Entertainment Weekly, while the first three seasons of “Penny Dreadful” were set in the Victorian England era, the follow-up will be more modern and far from the first location. It was stated that the characters will be in conflict as some are on the side of the deity Santa Muerte while the others chose to be on the Devil’s side. As a result, “City of Angels” will show a mix of supernatural encounters and the socio-political situation of that period.
“Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” has no premiere date yet since filming has yet to begin in sometime in 2019.
