The onscreen love team of Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan is probably one of the most convincing on TV right now. But the actors recently revealed that behind every steamy scene they film is the smell of peanut butter.

To honor the Americana theme of “Outlander” season 4, Heughan, Balfe, Sophie Skelton, and Richard Rankin answered a set of questions from E! during the New York Comic-Con last week. The actors talked about the American customs and food traditions that they find weird or still need to get used to. And peanut butter happened to be one of the most interesting subjects in the interview.

Heughan revealed, “I love to eat peanut butter before I do a scene with Caitriona.” His onscreen wife confirmed this behind-the-scenes fact and complained, “He does! And it stinks!” Unfortunately for peanut butter-hating Balfe, she has to work with a co-star who just loves eating peanut butter suspiciously before they film an intimate scene.

In the same red carpet interview, the actress shared that former “Outlander” cast member Tobias Menzies had the same on-the-set eating habit. Heughan’s co-star, Balfe, recalled that Menzies also ate peanut butter before their “first-ever kissing scene.”

On the other hand, the fun interview also revealed that Heughan’s first experience of a Thanksgiving dinner was with Balfe. However, he was not a fan of the cranberry sauce, to which Rankin agreed.

All four cast members also talked about American spellings and pronunciations. But while Balfe does not understand the need to drop the letter “U” in the American dictionary of words like “honor” and “color,” Heughan’s co-star still considers New York her “second home.”

Fans will find Heughan and Balfe arriving in America in the opening episode of “Outlander” season 4 on Nov. 4. Note that this is not Claire’s first time in the country and this will complicate things for her. Claire has lived through the time of the American civil rights movement and now she has to live at a time when slavery is still legal.
