Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe make very convincing on-screen lovers in the TV series “Outlander.” But in real life, they are simply good friends and the actress is actually engaged to Tony McGill.
With a very effective TV chemistry, Balfe and Heughan have been repeatedly subjected to dating rumors for years but none of it was ever found accurate. The actress, in fact, had been dating McGill for a couple of years before they got engaged in 2017.
However, given their hectic schedule in filming “Outlander” and promoting season 4, Balfe has yet to start with her wedding plans. And being the good friend that he is, Heughan has joked about helping organize and officiate her wedding.
While promoting “Outlander” season 4, Marie Claire asked Balfe about her upcoming wedding, which she said will happen “as soon as I plan it.” And with that, Heughan joked, “I've also offered my services to organize her wedding but I'm still to be taken up on that.”
“You know Sam, hitched up in a bar sounds great but I think my parents might expect something slightly more elevated than that,” Balfe retorted. Heughan further joked about officiating his co-star’s wedding as well.
Balfe confirmed her engagement to PEOPLE earlier this year and said she is “very happy” about it. Prior to their engagement, there were very few public sightings of Heughan’s co-star with her fiancé. The report noted they were photographed at events only twice, at the Oscar Wilde Awards in 2017 and the awarding of Jodie Foster’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 2016.
Meanwhile, “Outlander” season 4 premiered last Sunday with Claire Fraser (Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Heughan) deciding about their new home. After choosing to stay in America, they will arrive at the River Run plantation in “Outlander” season 4 episode 2.
However, in the Marie Claire interview, Balfe said her character will find it very difficult to stay in the North Carolina plantation. And a “tragic” incident happening in episode 2 on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 8 p.m. ET on Starz will likely force Claire and Jamie to do the right thing and leave River Run.
