“Sherlock” season 5 has long been anticipated and in fact, fans are already disappointed for the long delay. The delay itself is not just the thing that upsets the fans but the lack of concrete details with regards to the detective drama’s return.
With less to no information at all, some already began to wonder if “Sherlock” season 5 is coming at all. But then again, there is a glimmer of hope for the fifth season’s return because showrunners Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss previously stated that they are not closing the door for another installment of the much-loved detective drama series that star the lead actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.
As stated by co-showrunner, Steven Moffat, “Sherlock” season 5 may return however, they have no idea yet as to when they can finally begin its production. Of course, BBC must renew it first and it appears that the network’s decision also depends on Gattis and Moffat’s willingness to do another season.
On his interview with Radio Times, Moffat said, "Nobody has ever closed the door on Sherlock - we just say the same thing all the time and it gets quoted different ways. We haven't got an immediate plan, but I would remain surprised, given the collective enthusiasm we have for it, if we didn't do it again."
But this is not the first time that the showrunners commented on the possible “Sherlock” season 5 comeback. Mark Gatiss also echoed Moffat’s take on the show’s return and he revealed this during a red carpet interview at the “Christopher Robin” movie premiere in August 2018.
Gatiss said also said that the doors to do “Sherlock” season 5 has always been open and will remain this way until they can finally say for sure if there will be more stories after the show’s fourth installment. He also explained that he and Moffat were signed up by BBC Network to do another drama titled “Dracula” and this was what mainly kept them busy these days.
While fans wait for the announcement for “Sherlock” season 5, the movie version -“Sherlock Holmes 3” starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law is to watch out for in 2021.
