“The Winds of Winter” was supposed to be released in 2014 and George R.R. Martin himself gave this release year. However, he continuously missed his deadlines that is why the sixth book in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series has yet to be released and it is already 2018.
But while “The Winds of Winter” is still in the works, George R.R. Martin is not completely absent from the publishing scene. In fact, he has many projects, including the release of other books and TV deals related to his written works like “Game of Thrones.” Although the author has been releasing books, many fans are actually disappointed because his most-awaited written work is always getting pushed back while others are being released first.
Moreover, since 2014, George R.R. Martin has made promises almost every year regarding the release of “The Winds of Winter.” In 2015, his publisher at HarperCollins, Jane Johnson, said that they were not expecting “The Winds of Winter” to come out that year so it was not in their release schedule.
“I have no information on likely delivery,” The Guardian quoted her as saying. “These are increasingly complex books and require immense amounts of concentration to write.”
She added, “Fans really ought to appreciate that the length of these monsters is equivalent to two or three novels by other writers.”
It was the same story in 2016 and 2017 as George R.R. Martin revealed that “The Winds of Winter” was not yet ready. Apparently, his procrastinating led to many delays and in one of his previous updates, the author said that he was rewriting some parts of the book and this was causing him to miss the deadline. At this point, he said that he had already completed four chapters and the release date seemed to be near.
But in April 2018, he changed his stance and told fans that they have to keep waiting for the book. On his blog, the 70-year-old author wrote, “No, winter is not coming… not in 2018, at least. You’re going to have to keep waiting for THE WINDS OF WINTER.”
Then in August, he told fans that he was working on “TWOW” in an interview with John Picacio during the Locus Science Fiction Foundation fundraising event. “I am working on it. You’ll know when it’s done. The shot that’s heard around the world!” he said.
George R.R. Martin’s latest update about “The Winds of Winter” came in September. The author seemed to be frustrated as well when he confessed that he is slow and wish that he had finished the book a long time ago.
